Abstract

1349811 Rolling mills; shearing ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 11 April 1972 [27 April 1971] 16740/72 Headings B3M and B3W Apparatus for smoothing the edges of a number of metal strips slit longitudinally from a broader strip includes pairs of rolls 28, 29 (Fig. 3) which act on the edges of the strips 20a, 20b and 20c. An initially broad strip 20 (Fig. 1) passes through a slitter 22 which may trim the strip edges, and slit the strip into from 2 to 10 separate thin strips. The strips pass through guide rollers 84 and 85, further guide rollers 44 and 45, the edging rolls 28 and 29, guide rollers 86 and 87, and are coiled on a common spool 25. Each pair of guide rollers 44 and 45 is located upstream of a pair of associated edging rolls, the two pairs being mounted in common carriers 38 and 39. Each roller 45 has a radial fin 47 which extend into a groove in an associated roller 44 and locates an edge or edges of the strips. Each edging roll 28 or 29 (Fig. 7) is formed by two individual rolls 30 and 31 separated by a disclike nylon spacer 33. Each roll has a frustoconical rolling surface and is mounted for rotation on a common shaft 34. The upper carrier 38 (Fig. 6) is supported at one end by a transverse beam 77 and a pivot bar 79, and is spring-biased at its other end by a spring 40. The springs for all the upper carriers bear against a beam 42. The beam may either extend laterally between fixed side plates 66 (Fig. 1) or may be carried between a pair of pivotable arms. In the latter case, the upper carriers can readily be pivoted upwardly away from the strips. The lower carrier is supported by a pair of beams 68 and 69 and is adjustably clamped to the beam 69 by a bolt 74. Alternatively, a spacing collar may be located between the side plates of the carriers, the collar being clamped to the beam 68 to laterally locate the carriers. The pivot bar 79 may be dispensed with and a slidable latch used in co-operation with the beam 77 (Fig. 12 and 13, not shown). To align the upper and lower carriers relative to each other, the upper carrier of each pair may carry a vertical blade which passes downwardly between two strips to engage a recess in the lower carrier. When thin strips or foil are rolled, further guide rollers may be positioned between adjacent sets of edging rolls, the further rollers engaging the surface of the strips and being supported in carriers similar to those for the edging rolls.
