Abstract
1,237,336. Turf-cutting machine. P. BIBBY. 27 April, 1970 [31 Oct., 1969], No. 53381/69. Heading A1E. A turf cutting machine 1 has side blades 18 and a horizontal blade 20 for cutting strips of turf from the ground, and a guillotine blade 21 which performs a vertical cutting action on a turf strip to form predetermined lengths of strip. A turf roll-starter unit 16 which consists of a convex holding-down component 22 and a concave scoop 25, is mounted behind the blade 21. In use the guillotine 21, having cut a turf (T), Fig. 4 (not shown), lifts the edge of the turf and turns it over, see Fig. 5, and as machine 1 progresses the component 22 rolls over the turned over portion of the turf, thus preventing it from falling back on to the ground. Component 22 moves against the action of a spring (24), Fig. 3 (not shown), and returns to its normal position while the scoop 25 engages the edge of the rolled-over turf, lifts it forwardly so that the cut end of the turf is tucked in and a roll is started. A rack (17), Fig. 14 (not shown), which has blades (17d) commences to act upon the "started" roll, preventing it from un-. rolling as the scoop 25 is carried clear and returns to its normal position under the action of a spring (29), Fig. 3 (not shown), while the rack (17) completes the rolling operation.
