Abstract
206,693. Gale, F. G. Oct. 31, 1922. Angular bending.-In a machine provided with a number of pairs of rolls for converting metal strip into tubes, the rolls are mounted on a pair of supporting members, which are positively adjusted towards and from each other so as to effect a simultaneous adjustment of the rolls of each pair. The upper and lower rolls of a series of pairs of driven rolls 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and idle rolls 114, 2, 4, 6 are respectively carried by a pair of girders 23, 22, the girder 23 of which is adjustable in guides 26 by a number of screws 28 rotated and traversed by bevel gear 31, 32 in screwed sleeves mounted in housings 30 on the girder 22, by a hand wheel 37 on a cross shaft 35 geared to a pair of parallel shafts 33. The girder 22 also carries a pair of vertical rolls 8, which co-operate with a mandrel 19 so as to bring the edges of the tube against a seam guiding-pin 20 which supports the mandrel. The driven rolls are carried respectively by frames 41, 43 and 55, 56, which may be adjusted along the girders for spacing purposes, the rolls being also independently adjustable vertically in the frames by screws 45, 57 rotated by bevel gear from hand wheels 51, 60. The idle rolls are mounted in yokes 82 having stems 83 adjusted respectively by screws 85, 87 in guiding members 84 formed on yoke-shaped castings adjustable on the girders. The shafts 38, 52 of the driven rolls 1, 3, 5, 7 are connected by gearing 61, 62, and 68, 69 to shafts 63, 70 carried by cross-members secured to the yoke-shaped castings and rotated by bevel gears from a pair of parallel shafts arranged at the back of the machine. These parallel shafts are geared together through an intermediate wheel carried by toggle links from the shafts so that the gearing is operative in any position of adjustment. The upper roll of the last pair of driven rolls 9 for closing the seam, is driven from the links 101, 103. The rolls 8 are mounted in screw-adjusted blocks 90, Fig. 9, in a frame 91 which is adjustable vertically by a screw 94. The yoke-shaped castings may be provided with extensions having guides at each side for the stems 111 of vertically adjustable rests 112.
