Abstract

598,756. Rolling tubes ; straightening by skew - rolling ; separating mandrels from work. BIGWOOD & SON, Ltd., J., and PICTON, J. B. Sept. 8, 1945, No. 23182. [Class 83 (iv)] In a reeling machine, for finishing or straightening tubes or for separating them from mandrels, and in which the work is passed between a pair of driven rolls having axes disposed in spaced parallel planes and being so shaped that the work in passing between them is bent laterally, each roll has a separate driving shaft arranged on the axis about which the angular adjustment of the roll takes place and coupled to the roll by gearing. The machine comprises abase 10 having a fixed column 11 and a longitudinally adjustable column 12 carrying angularly adjustable forked members 13 and 14 supporting rolls 23 and 22 respectively. The column 12 is movable along lower guideways 15 and along upper fixed rods 56 by means of screws 55 secured to the column and passing through nuts adapted to be rotated by worms 54 carried by a shaft 51 rotatable by a hand wheel 53. On the other side, the column 12 is shaped to form a bearing for a circular projection 18 formed on the forked member 14 carrying the roll 22, the shaft 24 of which is geared to a parallel shaft 29 which is in turn geared to a shaft 33 coincident with the axis of rotation of the member 14 and carrying a pulley 34 adapted to be driven by a belt 35 from a motor mounted on the top of the column. The belt is tensioned by adjusting the motor-supporting bracket 40. Angular adjustment of the member 14 is effected by a screwed shaft 44 passing through a nut 43 on the machine frame and coupled to a lug 47 on the member 14. Bolts 49 passing through arcuate slots 48 and carrying nuts 50 enable the fork to be clamped after adjustment. Alternatively, the shaft 44 could carry a worm meshing with teeth formed on the base of the member 14. The roll 23 is similarly supported on the fixed column 11. The work is supported on a member 17 upstanding from the base of the machine. This member may be arranged to be traversed along the bed at half the speed of the column 12. In amodification, both shafts 33 may be geared'to a common driving shaft instead of having separate driving motors.
