1537570 Severing E BARLOW & J E BANNER 24 Nov 1977 [26 Nov 1976] 49345/76 Heading B3D A machine for cutting transversely through elongate workpieces or having a circular or annular cross-section of constant dimension comprises an arbor for a cutting wheel 8 mounted above a machine frame 2, means to move the arbor between inoperative and operative positions, and workpiece support means consisting of at least one group of driven rollers 16 arranged side-by-side with their axes parallel to the workpiece so as to define a trough, and means for driving the rollers. The cutting wheel 8 is rotated about its axis 10 by a belt drive from a motor 20 and is carried by a boom 22 movable between an upper, inoperative, position to a lower, operative, position by a pneumatic torque unit 24, an oscillating movement to improve the cutting action being imparted to the wheel by an eccentric shaft of a gear box 26. During cutting, the workpiece is supported on the drive rollers 16 which are provided with rubber sleeves 28 and are arranged in two groups of four, one group on each side of the wheel, the rollers being driven by a chain drive from a variable speed gearbox. To prevent creeping of the workpiece during cutting, clamping devices 14 are provided one each side of the cutting wheel. Each device consists of two rubber covered rollers 30 mounted on brackets 32 depending from steering arms 34 pivoted to the ends of an axle 36 by kingpins 38, the arms being interconnected by an adjustable track rod. The rollers 30 are pressed by pneumatic devices against the workpiece which can be steered back to its correct position if it tends to creep. To move the workpiece longitudinally, it can be raised from the driven rollers 16 by the raising of diabolo rollers 42 and the engagement of a drive 12 with the workpiece.
