Abstract

181,221. Mitchell, E. G., and France, H. May 17, 1921. Electrically-controlled fustenings.-In a lock for railway-carriage doors &c., an electricallycontrolled latch on the door frame is shot by a spring and pushed into withdrawn position by a member rocked by a latch on the door when this latch is manually withdrawn. The door-latch 6, operated by the handle 42, when withdrawn rocks a lever 45 pivoted at 46 to thrust forward a member 47 which pushes the nose of an electricallycontrolled latch 7, sliding on the door frame 1, flush with the door edge, so that the door can be opened. When a projection 14 on the cylinder 12 is engaging the latch 7, both latches 7, 6 are locked against movement. The projection 14 is locked in engagement with the latch by a ball 16 fitting into a groove 13 in the cylinder 12, the ball being retained against movement by the balls 9, 11 and the cylinder 10. To release the lock, the switch 35 is turned to make contact with the terminal on the wire 34, causing the solenoid 31 to be energized, and attracting the armature 28. A prolongation 30 on this engages an arm 22 on the quadrant 21, rocking this to engage the trigger 23 pivoted to the cam 18 and rotating the cam until the gap in it is under the ball 11. The balls 11, 9 and the cylinder 10 then drop, allowing the ball 16 to fall outwards from its engagement with the groove 13 of the cylinder 12. This cylinder is held against gravity by a light spring 17, but the rounded end of the projection 14 and the corresponding depression in the latch 7 permits disengagement of the projection when the latch is operated. The balls 16 and 11 are pre vented from falling out by shoulders. To re-lock the device, the latch 6 is shot by its spring 44, " making " the spring contact 39, 40 and withdrawing the member 47 allowing the latch 7 to shoot under the action of its spring 8. The projection 14 then engages the latch and the contact 39, 40 energizes the solenoid 36, attracting the armature, the end 30 of which engages the pin 20 to rock the cam 18 and force the balls 11, 9 and the cylinder 10 upwards to lock the ball 16 in the groove 13. The circuit may be extended to operate all the doors of a railway train, a thermally-operated switch being incorporated to ensure the release of the latch in case of fire.
