Abstract

247,006. Marks, E. C. R., (Keil & Son, Inc., F.). Feb. 4, 1925. Locking sliding latches; locks, with bolts interlocking with staples; night latches; lockmechanism, slidertype; bolts; latches, sliding.-A lock has one or more bolts which are projected into a staple and then rotated to interlock therewith, and one latch which is locked against retraction when the bolts are shot, and which locks the bolts against retraction when held in the withdrawn position by a finger catch. The latch and bolts are operated from the outside by a common revolving-barrel mechanism but have separate handles for operation from the inside of the door. Fig. 2 shows the latch 27 shot bv its spring and the bolts 20, 21 in the withdrawn position. To shoot and turn the bolts from outside, the key 1 is inserted in the revolving-barrel mechanism and turned, rotating a connector-bar 2 and an arm 4. This causes a stud 5 on the arm 4 to engage a rib 6 on a vertically sliding plate 7 to lift the plate and raise a flange 11 thereon out of engagement with the'stop 9 on the casing. Further turning of the key causes the stud 5 to engage an inclined rib 62 on the horizontally sliding plate 13 upon which the slide 7 is mounted, moving the plate 13 to the left. This plate carries projecting arms 14, 15 having studs 16, 17 respectively at their ends to engage spiral slots 18, 19 in the bolts 20, 21. As the plate 13 is slid forward by the key, the studs 16, 17 push the bolts, mounted on a sliding plate 8, forward to shoot them into the staple 64. When the bolts are shot, a cross piece 12 in the plate 8 abuts on a rib 42 on the latch 27, stopping further forward motion of the plate 8 and bolts. As the key is further turned, the plate 13 travels onward until the arms 14, 13 engage the end of the casing, the studs 16, 17 travelling down the spiral slots 18, 19 rotating the bolts through 90‹ into the position shown in Fig. 34, projections 22, 23 on the bolt ends then being out of alignment.with the corresponding slots in the staple 64 so that the bolts cannot be retracted by simple linear movement. Reverse turning of the key withdraws the bolts and when they are completely withdrawn, continued rotation of the key withdraws the latch, the stud 5 striking the flange 44 of the pivoted lever 43 and causing this lever to rock a lever 47 which engages a flange 30 on the tail of the latch. The bolts are operated from the inside by a handle 26 which turns a disc 24 provided with an eccentric pin 25 which engages a hole in the slider 7. The latch 27 is operated from inside by a handle 40 which is provided with the double follower 38 engaging in a suitable slot in the shank 28 of the latch. A catch 32 with a finger piece 34 projecting outside the casing, can lock the latch in the shot or withdrawn positions. The bolts can he made of hardened steel, or with a hardened steel core to prevent release by sawing through them.
