Application filed October To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CARL HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact Vdescription `of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itv appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to door locks and more particularly to such as combine in a single element the latch by which the door may be readily opened upon manipulation of a knob and the dead bolt which requires al keyto operate it, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient device of this character composed of but few parts so assembled as to insure ease and certainty in operation and securityY in both its use as a latch. and a lock.

The lock case is of the usual type having side plate 2 which fits flush with the edge of the door; bedplate 3 with posts and guides; a cover plate 4, these plates having the necessary-openings for the different'parts of the lock. 5 designates the latchsupported'at one end of alright angulararm or'l'ever 6 which has a downwardly extending lug-7. sition it may be withdrawn by a lever 9 Operated by outer or inner knobs at the ends of spindles 10, 11, the squared end of the latter fitting in the squared-bore of the hub 12 of the-lever. This squared end of the spindle lllyis mortisedvas at 13 to receive the tenon 14 of the spindle 10 and it alsohas a lateral projection 15.
At 2O I have shown the latch bolt. This is provided with a slot 21 to receive a projection 22 of the bed plate which with -a bar 23 of the latter and the pin 24 working in a second slot 25 of the latch bolt forms a guide for such latch bolt. Talons 26-27 `and 2828a form the means `by which the bolt is moved by a key. At the end of the latch bolt next adjacent the latch ,is a rstud 29` which is designed, in one position of the parts (see Figure 8), lto act as a stop, contacting with the hack of the latch 5, to prevent retraction of the same and `in another position (see Figure 1) to retract the latch uponmanipulation of the bolt by a key, the stud in this last named position acting against the downwardly extending 'lug 7 of thel latch. A lateral projection 30 is prol vided on the latchbolt by which it may be locked in its different positions, cut outs 31 of a spring controlled Vtumbler 32 registering with suchprojection for that purposethe tumbler being-pivoted on the pin, 24 so'that Y it may be moved from engagement with the latch bolt by a `key, preparatory to movement of the bolt by such key.
For the :purpose of holding the latch either retracted or set as a dead bolt I provide a stop button the arm 41 of which may be turned to engage the supporting arm of the latch, as shown in Figure 7, to hold it retracted or, when the latchV is protracted to hold it against movement, the arm 41 be1ng so shaped, as indicated in Figure 11 as to engage theend of lthe latch arm 6, as shown in Figure 10. Fingersl 42 are provided on the shank of this button to engage a short post 43` and limit the turning movement of vthe stop. v
As heretofore explained, the spindles 10 and 11 are tenoned and mortised so that operation of the lever arm bythe knob on the outside of the door can only be accomplished ,when itsftenon is fitted in the mortise ofthe spindle 11. In Figure. 2 I have shown the parts in operable position. If 1t be desired to preventoperation of the latch from thetcatsde by the door. knob, when the latch bolt -is npt set in locking ppsitiOlL the inner knob 51' is turned so that the lateral projection 15 may pass under the lip`52on the inside of the door plate' which -willallow the spindle 10 to be drawn inwardly and out of engagement With its complementary spindle 9. A latch and lock mechanism for doors including a case, a spring actuated latch, a lever for retracting said latch, a spindle connected With said lever for operating it from one side of a door, a second spindle with which said irst named spindle is designed to engage to operate said lever from the opposite side of a door, a stop acting on said first mentioned spindle to prevent coupling with said second spindle, key actuated tumbler-controlled means for engaging said latch, said means being movable into one position to lock said latch against movement by either spindle and into another position to retract said latch by key manipulation, and a rotary element cooperating with said latch toprevent operation by said spindles or said key actuated means.
13. In a latch and lock mechanism for doors, the combination 'of a rotatable spindle including separable interlocking sections, knobs on said spindles and a Weight on one ot said spindles for maintaining it in a predetermined position to engage the end et' the other spindle.
14. In a latch and lock mechanism for doors, the combination of a rotatable spindle including separable interlocking sections, knobs en said spindles and means acting upon one of said spindles normally tending to maintain it in a predetermined position to engage the end of the other spindle.
