Abstract

607,278. Locks. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 14, 1944, No. 15474. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1943. [Class 44] In a lock of the kind mounted in a housing to be secured to a locker &c. and including a locking bolt adapted to lock the main latch bolt of the locker &c, in which the locking bolt is mounted for movement on the lock housing in releasing and locking directions with the movement of the main bolt, the locking bolt is adapted to be released under the control of a series of tumblers having gatings by which they are adapted to control the movements of a fence, and the movement of the bolt in releasing direction is normally prevented by a pivotallymounted locking member which is adapted to be made ineffective when the fence moves into the gatings of the tumblers. The general arrangement is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The locker 10 has the usual bolt 11, with a handle 12 and lugs 13, which are adapted to slide behind ears 14 on striking plates 15 on the locker frame. The door is released by upward movement of the bolt 11, and the bolt is held up by engagement of a spring 19 in a notch 20 on the bolt. On closing the door, the spring 19 is disengaged by contact with the striking plate 15, allowing the bolt to drop. The locking bolt 22 moves vertically, but when locked, prevents movement of the bolt 11 by contact with the arm 24 thereon, and is provided with lugs 23 on each side so as to be applicable to either right or left opening doors. When unlocked, bolt 22 is raised by bolt 11 on turning the handle 12. In a modification, the bolt 11 has arms engaging both upper and lower surfaces of the bolt lug 23, and bolt 11 is not provided with a handle, the operating knob of the lock serving to operate the bolt 11. The lock, Figs. 7, 9, 14, comprises a housing 26 with track ways 27 at each side accommodating vertical guides 28 on the bolt 22. Springs 29 bear on shoulders 30 on the bolt 22 and on the heads of guide pins 32, which bear partly against shoulders 33 on the bolt and partly against shoulders 34 on the housing 26, thus tending to bring the bolt to the central position. Rotating within an opening 35 in the housing is a tumbler casing 36, Figs. 19, 20, carrying two pins 37, 38. Within casing 36 a series of tumblers 40 are. mounted to rotate on a pin 39. These are actuated through fingers on a series of operating discs 42 in the usual manner. The outermost tumbler 44 is formed with a clutch disc 45 having internal ratchet teeth 46. The fence 48, Fig. 18, of the lock, held against the edges of the tumblers by a spring, has a part 49 which enters gatings 52 on the tumblers when the latter are set to the opening combination, and is slidable relatively to the casing 36, but constrained to rotate therewith. In the unlocking position, casing 36 and fence 48 are rotated by rotation of the tumblers, which are rotated by the knob 25, Fig. 7. The fence 48 has a pin 53 engaging in a slot in a dog 55 loosely pivoted on a pin 58 secured to the housing 26; as the fence drops into the aligned gatings of the tumblers, the head 60 of the pin 53 coacts with a cranked part of the dog to move the lower end of the latter out of engagement with a lug 62 on the bolt 22, Fig. 14. Normally the dog 55 lies against a shelf 63, and abuts against lug 62, preventing upward movement of the bolt. The bolt is moved to unlocking position by contact of either pin 37 or pin 38 on the tumbler casing with the under surface of the shelf 63. A camplate 65 on the bolt engages the longer pin 38 to rotate the casing 36 when the bolt 22 is moved upwardly by the bolt 11. The permutation locking mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 430,506. The dial knob 25 is adapted to rotate driving lugs 70, which enter slots in the driving clutch member 72. This member is formed with a sleeve 73 having a ratcheted flange 74 normally in engagement with the ratchet teeth 46 on the disc 45 of the tumbler 44. To disperse the tumbler plates, a spring-plate disperser 75, Fig. 11, is provided, the spring wings 76 of which extend into the plane of movement of the fence 48. As the fence rotates in the unlocking movement, it depresses one wing 76 and then releases it as it moves to the position of Fig. 11; on rotation in the reverse, direction, the fence, is moved by contact of its lower end with the wing, and lifted from the gatings and then moved, with the casing, relatively to the tumblers to disperse the combination. Within the dial knob is mounted a key plug 80, Fig. 7, which controls the rotation of a sleeve 81, as described in Specification 430,506, so that the bolt may be retracted without using the combination. A lug 83 on the. sleeve 81 enters an arcuate slot 84 in the central pin 39 of the tumbler casing. To reset, the combination, the ratcheted flange 74 of the sleeve 73 of the driving clutch member 72 is disengaged from the teeth 46 of the disc 45. For this purpose a control slide 85, Figs. 21 and 7 is provided. Normally a cam surface. 86 of the slider 85 is kept against the ratcheted flange 74, folding the driving clutch member 72 with the teeth of flange 74 engaged with teeth 46. If the bolt 22 is moved to release position, a key.way at the back of the lock housing is uncovered, and a key 90 can be inserted and rotated to move slide 85 downwardly and move the ports 72, 73, 74 to the left from the position of Fig. 7, disengaging the teeth of flange 74 from the teeth 46. The knob 25 is then manipulated to set a new combination.
