Abstract

180,628. Metcalfe, R. D., and Metcalfe, J. C. May 24, 1921, [Convention date]. Giffard injectors. - Relates to exhaust steam injectors for steam boilers normally employing exhaust steam at atmospheric pressure as the inducing fluid, but operable also by live steam throttled down to that pressure. Exhaust steam flows through a valve f, that may be closed by a handle-operated cam i, to the steam nozzle e, water cone d, and the diffuser consisting of a combining cone b with self-starting flap c and a delivery cone a. Live steam at boiler pressure to assist the exhaust supply enters by a steam nozzle j. There is also a supply, through the pipe k, of live steam throttled to atmospheric pressure that enters an annular passage n and issues by a ring o of nozzle-like apertures p into the main steam nozzle e, an outlet m serving to prevent formation of a vacuum around the valve f. Steam also diffuses into the injector through the space between the ring o and the face of the throttled steam supply passage k, and a supplementary supply is provided by a passage q to become operative between the water cone d and the combining cone b in series with the steam passing through the main steam cone.
