Abstract

178,943. Stockman, W. B., Morton, B. S., and East, E. K. Jan. 26, 1921. Cylinders, pipes for; cylinders, cleaning; moistening charge.-A device for admitting to the induction pipe heated air, heated air and water vapour, cold air, a priming fuel, or a decarbonizing-fluid, comprises a heating-chamber 13 mounted on the exhaust manifold, provided with a perforated partition 17 and adapted to contain water which may be drawn off entirely through a cock 21. Through the centre of the heater passes a conical air-pipe 22 with hemispherical baffle 23, which surrounds a pipe 44 leading to a valve casing 26. The casing is provided with a twoway valve 33 and a nozzle 27 screwed into the induction pipe 12, the end of the nozzle having a series of horizontally arranged orifices 30. The casing also has a pipe 43 leading to the atmosphere, or to a source of decarbonizing fluid for cleaning the cylinders. The valve 33 has shoulders 39 coacting with a stop 40, and is actuated through a ring 36, stirrup 37, and rod 38 with hand-wheel. The heater has a float 20 to indicate the level of water therein. At starting, a plate 2@ is moved to one side and a priming-fuel poured down the pipe 44, the valve 33 being in the position shown in Fig. 5. Also a pan 46 may be filled with gasolene, which is ignited to heat air entering the pipe 44. To admit cold fresh air, the valve 33 is turned so that the duct therein registers with the conduit 32, Fig. 5.
