Band; actuated by springs and weights; electric and magnetic. -One end of a brake band is connected to a spring or weight S, Fig. 1, and the other to a lever E<1> or other actuating-device. In the " off " position the spring draws a part D<1> on the end of the band against a stop d1, and there is no tension of the band. In the " on " position the lever E<1> engages with a stop F<1>, the part D<1> is drawn away from the stop d1 and the tension on the band is determined by the spring or weight S and is uniform. The spring or weight S may be connected directly to the band or through a lever or the like. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which the brake is operated by the movable core E of a solenoid, which, in the " on " position, is drawn into engagement with a fixed core F. The connecting- link a2 is bifurcated, and the link a3 passes through the fork, carries an adjustable stoppiece D, and is encircled by the spring S. The arrangement is stated to be particularly applicable to epicyclic change-speed gears for planing- machines.
