Wire and rod compensators; slots, reversers, and the like.- In apparatus of the kind described in the parent Specification, the spindle 6, to which the signal lever 10 is secured, is mounted in two bearings in a U-shaped frame 1, 5 and the chain drun@ 7 is mounted independently upon a boss on the part 5. The clutch-member 11 is formed of a clutch part 34 and two parallel plates between which the mechanism 15, 22, 24 is mounted. The plates carry lugs 11<a> which slidingly embrace a squared portion 9 of the shaft. A straight-cored electromagnet 17 is carried by the member 11 and, being energized, attracts its armature 19 which is pivoted at 21. A shoulder 30 of the armature thereupon moves a rod 31 and, through a spring 32, presses a roller 12 on the inner surface of the chain drum and the subsequent rotation of the drum by the chain carries the roller up to the lever 15. The lever 15 is, however, locked by the mechanism 22, 24, while the electromagnet is energized, and therefore the roller 12 forces the member 11 to move endwise into clutching engagement with the chain drum. The roller' 12 may be a spiral spring or a short cylinder with deep cross-cuts so that it will bed itself on to the surface of the drum. The pivot 27 is provided by an eccentric pin so that the mechanism may be adjusted. Leads from the terminal box 40 are brought through the hollow shaft 6 and terminate in plugs which fit into sockets on the member 11 from which permanent connections are taken to the electromagnet.
