Abstract
200,911. McLachlan, N. W. April 20, 1922. Relays.-A contact-making arrangement whereby a small movement due to an automatic telegraph transmitter, such as a Wheatstone transmitter, produces a large movement of a contact arm, comprises a continuously-driven fly-wheel A fast to a clutch-member C adapted to be engaged by a second clutch-member D carrying a contact arm N when the member D receives a small longitudinal movement. The member D, rotatably mounted but held against longitudinal movement on a rod F, is normally kept out of engagement by a spring G. The other end of the rod F is secured to a band I with blocks K in contact with a driven drum J. Normally, the friction is insufficient to move the rod to the right, but the friction is increased when the signalling current impulse passes through a coil, not shown, carried by the drum J, the operation being as described in Specification 176,932. The clutch-members may carry coils Q, R, a direct current being supplied to one coil, and the signalling current passing through the other, whereby the frictional engagement of the clutchmembers is increased. Contact N is normally held away from the co-operating fixed contact 0 by a spring P. A modification is described employing an expanding clutch operated by the rod F.
