Abstract
192,804. Lytton, E. Nov. 15, 1921. Clutches, friction.-In contracting-band friction clutches, of the kind in which the band is secured at one end to a driving or driven casing or hollow fly-wheel, and at the other end to an arm or pin passing through a slot in the casing and actuated by a lever, which is pivoted to the casing and is acted on, directly or throughthe intermediary of other moving parts, by a sliding collar, this collar has a coned operating-surface. In one form, Fig. 3, applicable where the driving-shaft 1 is subject to reversal, the drum 2, which may be covered with friction material, is encircled by two oppositely-directed bands 14, 14<1> each secured at one end to the loose casing 4 by screws, or as shown at 15, 20. The free ends of the bands are connected respectively to arms 16, 21, traversing slots 17, 22 in the casing wall and carried by crossed levers 18, 23, which are pivoted to the outside of the casing 4 and are actuated by a sliding coned collar 12 to tighten the bands simultaneously. A similar arrangement is applicable to a single band and lever. In a modification, Fig. 6, a pin 9, passing through a slot 5 to the free end of the band 7, is carried by a bell-crank lever 34, which is actuated through an adjusting- screw 33 by a radially-sliding rod 36 bearing on the coned collar 12. This arrangement may also be duplicated.
