Clutches, friction.-In friction clutches of the contracting-band type, the fixed end of the band, or of each band, passes transversely through and is secured to the fulcrum spindle of an operating- lever connected to the movable end of the band, or of another band, where more than one are used. As applied to a clutch, a shaft d is clutched to a drum b on a loose pulley c by two bands a, having their movable ends connected to lever e<1> and their fixed ends to adjusting-screws h, each of which passes respectively through a pin rotatable in the hollow spindle f of the lever e<1> appertaining to the other band. The spindles f are slotted to allow angular motion of the screws h and are journaled in arms m bolted to the shaft d. The screws h are provided with nuts i and washers j or integral extensions of the nuts. The levers e<1> are turned by a sliding-collar q and links p, n doubly jointed at o. The band may be lined with wood blocks &c.
