Abstract
333,373. Andrews, J. July 27, 1929. Variable-speed gearing comprises gears 10 - - 13 loose upon a shaft 2 with a hollow end through which pass means for operating pairs of cone clutches 19, 22, which in action thrust one of the gears 10 &c. against a friction plate 31 - - 33 fast on the shaft. The cone pair 19 is connected by a cross member 29 to a central rod 28. The pair 22 is connected to a. sleeve 25 surrounding the rod 28. The rod 28 and sleeve 25 are thrust axially one way or the other by turning nuts 51, 50 which cannot move axially. Screwed bushes 48, 43 held against rotation communicate thrust to the rod and sleeve respectively. Additional cone pairs may be operated by additional sleeves, nuts, and bushes.
