Abstract
175,398. Pollard, Ltd., J., and Pollard, J. T. Nov. 15, 1920. Spindle apparatus.-A device for curling or double twisting bands of hay, straw, wood wool, horse hair, African fibre &c., such as used for making cores for casting and packing for upholstery &c., comprises a frame a, Fig. 1, rotated in bearings b and carrying a drum e, the flanges of which are separate, one attached to a sleeve n<2> and the other revolublv mounted in the other side of the frame. A square spindle d passes through the sleeve n<2> into an opening in the opposite flange and is axially secured by a screw d<1> in a boss n<3> of the sleeve n<2>. Motion is conveyed from a sun wheel h, running loose on the bearing b but retarded by a band brake a<3>, through a planet wheel h<1> to a traverse screw g and by a chain l to a boss n locked on the sleeve n<2> by a screw n<1>. The material to be spun is fed through a hollow trunnion a<2>, and an eye f on the screw g to the drum e where it is wound on the spindle d or on a bobbin e<1>, which may have flanges. To curl the band so produced, the screw n<1> is slackened and the band is drawn through the trunnion a<2> to which is attached a device comprising a sleeve o, Figs 1 and 2, having a lug o<2> and a tapered nose q, journaled in alignment with the trunnion. The band passes through a slot o<1> in the sleeve and over a roller p or through an eye in the lug o<2> and is wrapped round the nose q from which it is drawn off in the curled form.
