580,608. Yarn &c. tension arrangements. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. July 7, 1944, No. 12994. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1943. [Class 120 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] In an arrangement for controlling the tension of a strand, a drum 10, rotatable about a central axis, has a weighted cord 24 passing round it to exert a torque, while a strand 16 is advanced in the direction of the drum axis and then outwardly to the periphery to drag over an arc of the surface of the drum. The strand 16 is pulled from the drum in a direction to decrease this arc while the torque tends to increase it so that the tension of the strand as it leaves the drum will equal the constant torque. In a modification, the weighted cord is wound round a smaller drum than that bearing the strand, and the strand-bearing drum is given a squirrel-caged construction having free running rollers round its periphery.
