Abstract

173,523. Toledo Scale Co., (Assignees of Hapgood, C. H.). Dec. 29, 1920, [Convention date]. Compound - lever apparatus; computing- apparatus; pendulumweight apparatus. - Relates to a weighing- scale of the kind whereiu platform levers are connected by flexible means to load-balancing pendulums, and consists in supporting the platform upon pairs of posts each pair being rigidly carried by a cross-bar and each cross-bar being slung by links from a spider having downward extensions resting on the knife-edges of the platform levers. As shown in Fig. 1, a bar 2 extends across the front of the casing and is fitted at the ends with adjustable feet 5 and supports the fulcrums 10 of the large platform lever 12. The platform spider 17 is supported on the platform levers, and the platform 33 is slung from the spider by means of links 27, a frame 28 (comprised of the above-mentioned cross-bars connected by rods) and adjustable posts 31. The knife-edges of the platform levers are prevented from leaving their bearings by means of guard strips or split pins. The pull of the platform levers is transmitted by a draw rod 58, crosshead 57, and flexible bands 56 to a pair of overlapping power sectors 44 adjustably connected to pendulum levers 40. The power sectors and the pendulum levers are supported by flexible bands 39 passing over fulcrum sectors 51 rolling upon guides 38. The capacity of the scale may be changed by employing heavier or lighter pendulum weights 50 the zero balance of the scale being maintained by placing lighter or heavier sleeves around the shafts 42 of the pendulums. Guards 59 near the ends of the shafts 42 prevent incorrect displacement of the pendulums. The computing drum 75 is actuated from the platform lever 12 through a' spring member 86, Fig. 19, and a rack bar 87. The connection between the lever 12 and the spring member 86 is effected by a plate 80 with upwardly and downwardly directed knife-edges. The spindle 76 of the computing drum has trunnions at the ends, and has a driving pinion 78 mounted on a central enlargement of the spindle formed by shrinking a sleeve thereon. This arrangement of the spindle permits of economical machining of the necessary parts. The computing drum is illuminated at each side by electric lamps mounted in pairs in sockets upon removable caps 101. Resilient contacts extending from the sockets engage contacts on the hood 74 and the circuit is completed through a flexible contact strip 107 except in the zero position of the scale when the strip 107 is maintained in the open position by the draw rod 58. The electric current is supplied through a plug 111 'in the hood or through a plug 112 in the bar 2.
