Abstract

635,355. Weighing-apparatus. YOUNG, F. C., REDMAN, A. M., and BAILEY, R. H. Nov. 20, 1946, No. 34459. [Class 143] The pan 19 of a weighing scale, particularly for infants, has depending feet 21 extending through openings in the top of a housing 18 enclosing the mechanism so as to rest on a table 22 within the housing; the table is supported by the outer ends of a pair of longitudinally off-set weighing levers whose inner ends are interconnected, balance weights for the levers being adjustable exteriorly of the housing. As shown, the table 22 has four depending legs by which it is supported on the weighing levers, the two rear ones 38 resting on knife-edges 37 of arms 24 of one of the weighing levers, these arms 24 being disposed at either side of the machine and connected by a transverse bridge member 23, whilst a single opposing arm 25 of the lever extends centrally and forwardly from the bridge member. Fulcrum knife-edges 34 on the arms 24 rest on bearings 33 supported in bridles 30 hung on knife-edges 28 mounted on pillars 15 upstanding from a base casting 10. The two front legs 47 of the table 22 are similarly supported on knife-edges 46 of spaced connected arms 41 of the second weighing lever, the fulcrum knife-edges 43 being on these arms 41 whilst a single opposing arm 39 extends centrally from a transverse bridge member 40 connecting the arms so as to overlie the opposing arm 25 of the first lever. The.free ends of these arms are interconnected by a strut 56 engaging knife-edges on the arms. The load is counterbalanced by two weights, a large one 77 for pounds and a small one 78 for ounces. These weights are adapted to be traversed along arms 73 and 74 extending rearwardly from the weighing lever bridge member 40 and, for this purpose, each is connected by an endless-wire 81 passing over pulleys 79, 80 and 85 or 86 with a respective adjusting dial 66, 67 provided with a finger knob and calibrated in pounds and ounces. A serrated disc 92 fast with the pounds dial is engaged by a spring-loaded ball so that whole pounds only can be set on this dial, fractions being taken account of by the ounces dial 67. The state of balance is shown by a horizontal index line on a plate 60 mounted by means of a rod 59 on the lever arm 25 and moving vertically behind index pointers at the sides of a sight aperture 82. The balance is zeroised by turning a knob 68, the threaded spindle 69 of which traverses a third counterweight 70. All three controls 66, 67 and 68 are mounted on the bridge member 40.
