Abstract

172,729. Timbrell, W. Sept. 14, 1920. Interconnecting guard with starting-gear.-In guards for the work and feed. mechanism of capstan and like lathes, cf the type in which the guard is interlocked with the chuck, collet, or like control to prevent operative starting of the lathe with the guard open, the guard is independently supported by standards secured to the floor &c., so that the device may be applied to existing lathes. The guard 6 turns with a shaft 4 carried in bearings 3 secured to adjustable, telescopic standards 1. A sliding-sleeve 7, bolted by a lug 11 to the collet-actuating fork &c. has an L.shaped slot 8, 9 co-operating with a stop 10 on the shaft, as described in Specification 125,549, or the slot may comprise helical and longitudinal portions, so that primary movement of the collet-actuating fork &c. rotates the shaft 4 to close the guard, full movement thereof being possible only if the guard is unobstructed. Specification 172,918 also is referred to.
