Abstract

507,913. Drilling. HERBERT, Ltd., 'A., LLOYD. A. H., TIPPLE, E. W., and MACLAREN, G. W. Dec. 22,1937, No. 35446. [Class 83 (iii)] In a drilling &c. machine having a feed shaft rotatable by a handle pivotally mounted thereon and having a clutch element slidable thereon for engaging an automatic power feed, which may be moved by pivotal movement of the handle in either direction from its neutral position, a spring detent is provided for holding the clutch in the engaged position, which may be released by operator-controlled means. The drill spindle 11 is fed by a rack and a pinion 12 integral with a shaft 13 carrying a hand feed lever 15 which may be swung laterally about a pivot 14. A worm wheel 16 loose on the shaft has inclined clutch teeth 17 engageable with similar teeth on a sleeve 18 splined to the shaft by a pin 19 and normally pressed to the disengaged position by an adjustable spring 21. The lever 15 passes through a slot 23 in the sleeve 18 so that lateral swinging of the lever in either direction from the neutral position shown will move the sleeve axially to engage the clutch. The sleeve is held in the engaged position by a spring plunger 29 having a flat surface 31 engaging a similar surface 28 on a pin 27 carried by a lever 24 pivoted at 25 and having rollers 26 located in an annular groove in the sleeve. The plunger 29 may be released to stop the feed manually, by means of a lever 32, or automatically by a dog 34 on a ring 35 adjustably secured to a flange 36 fixed to the sleeve by a screw 37. If the shaft 13 is to be rotated through more than one revolution the dog 34 may cooperate with an indexable stop as described in Specification 474,964. Depth of feed, determining.-When the spindle 11 is being fed by hand, the dog 34 and plunger 29 form a positive stop for the feed,
