Abstract
121,148. Asquith, Ltd., W., and Feather, G. Nov. 2,1917. Turning.-Consists in a lathe in which the saddle or carriage A extends the whole length or nearly the whole length of the bed to protect the latter and other parts from cuttings, and in which the tool is mounted about the middle of the saddle. The headstock and tailstock are set back, as is usual, to allow the carriage to pass in front of them. The bed has a preferably raised narrow slideway b in front for the saddle or carriage, and the top is inclined to direct the cuttings towards the rear, and may be fitted with gratings b<2> to allow the cooling- fluid to drain away into a sump in the bed or its supports. The tool a is placed at the centre of the carriage, which is inclined towards the rear, as shown at a<1>, to throw off the cuttings, &c. When rack-andpinion traversing-gear is employed, the rack a' is fixed on the carriage between the guideway and point of tool, and the pinion is driven by power worm gear a<2> or by a hand or capstan wheel a<3>.
