[Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] An attachment for milling, grinding, polishing or like operations comprises a vertical slide a, Fig. 1, or height-adjusting pillar, on which a tool-spindle carriage d is mounted, the spindle being at right angles to the slide and driven from the spindle k of a lathe or like machinetool to which the vertical slide or like member is attached, the work p being supported on the machine cross-slide q or on any other additional table, turntable or fitment. The spindle f of the attachment may be driven by a flexible and extensible shaft h or by toothed gearing connected by pivoted links s, s<1>, Fig. 3 ; an alternative toothed drive comprises a vertically extending toothed cylinder t, Fig. 4, engaged by a gear wheel on the cutter spindle. The cutter spindle or arbor may be supported at its outer end by a bracket depending from an overarm g, similar to conventional milling-machines, and by links o connected to the bed of the machine carrying the attachment. Adjustable end mills and rack cutting devices may be connected to the carriage d in the usual manner.
