Abstract

474,176. Milling-machines. ARCHDALE & CO., Ltd., J., and WRIGHT, I. H. Sept. 8, 1936, No. 24462. [Class 83 (iii)] A milling-machine comprises a pedestal a carrying the usual work table or tables b, and a column f carrying the cutter spindle and sliding on a vertical guide h extending from the table level to the base of the pedestal. The pedestal may be of hollow construction to contain coolant fluid and has upper extensions e to catch swarf and coolant. Stiffening members, n are also provided. The column may be moved vertically on its guides by a screw i rotated from a hand wheel m, and the column carries a motor o connected through belt gearing r and reduction gearing p to the spindle q. A shaft u geared to the same motor actuates the table feed. A pair of overarms z carry an outer spindle support 2 and further stiffening is provided by a brace 3. The cutter spindle is carried in a sleeve v which is axially adjustable by a pair of screws x, w, the former screwing in the column and engaging a lug y on the sleeve and the screw w passing freely through a hole in the column and screwing in the lug y.
