Guards, controlling. - A capstan lathe is provided with a pivoted guard and the chuck or collet cannot be closed until the guard is in its protective position. An arm b connected to a sliding fork a, by which the collet is operated, has a boss f sliding on a shaft d to which the guard e is fixed. A projection g on the shaft works in an L-shaped slot in the boss f in such a way as to prevent the guard from being swung back except when the collet is open and to prevent the collet from being closed until the guard is in position. In a modification, the slot has also a helical portion by means of which motion of the fork a closes the guard, and if the guard should be obstructed the collet cannot be closed.
