Retort furnaces; charging and discharging.- An inclined externally heated retort is divided into high and low temperature chambers 18, 29 having separate gas outlets 47, and the material to be treated is continuously passed through the retort by reciprocating scrapers 46. The retort is heated by combustion of fuel on the grate 11, the chamber 18 situated close to the grate being heated to between 1,000 and 2,000‹ F. and the chamber 29 to between 1,000 and 900‹ F. The scrapers 46 serve to maintain a uniform depth of the fuel, which is charged through a shoot 28, the residue passing by a pipe 21 into a water seal. The heating-gases flow under the chamber 29 and around a passage 25, through which the material passes and is preliminarily heated, and escape by a stack pipe 32.
