Producers.-In a method of gasifying coal in which the coal is fed into vertical retorts a, the coke from which is treated in producers b with alternate blasts of air and steam, tar condensed from the gases produced is injected into the producers. The tar is sprayed through openings d on to the incandescent coke at a part above the steam blast at the grate level when steam is admitted for the production of water gas. An arch c extends over the generators and affords spaces into which the tar may be effectively sprayed. The Provisional Specification refers to Specification 164,935.
