Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-Materials such as coal, shale, lignite, peat, wood, nutshells, &c. are distilled in a retort to a maximum temperature of about 1300‹ C. and the residue is gasified in a gas-producer, part of the gas from which is burnt ia a combustion chamber f and flues g surround. ing the retort. This gas enters by a conduit q. Gases from the retort, after treatment in recovery plant, are also supplied by a pipe d, air preheated in flues i being used for the combustion of the gases. The retort may be inclined, or two retorts may be combined with one gas generator. Specification 4572/13, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], is referred to.
