Abstract

123,738. Smith, C. H. Feb. 16, 1918, [Convention date]. Carbonizing apparatus and processes.-Caking or swelling coals are first subjected in a finely divided condition to distillation at 800 degrees to 950 degrees F. in a retort or oven 3, and the carbonaceous residue, a porous form of carbon free 'from tar, but still containing the nitrogenous matter, is delivered by a conveyor 7 to a gas producer 19, where it is converted into producer gas or water gas and ammonia at a temperature of 1500 degrees to 1800 degrees F. The coal is fed to the retort by a screw conveyor 2, and moved along the retort by paddles on two parallel shafts 5, being discharged at a conduit 6 having two gates 8, 9. The gases and tar are withdrawn by an exhauster 37, and pass through a cooler and purifier 16, in which the tar collects, to a holder 17, from which part of the gas may be supplied to the combustion chambers 10 for heating the retort. The gas from the producer 19 is collected at 21, and the ammonia at 20.
