Abstract

In the known ammonia-soda process for the manufacture of ammonium and sodium bicarbonates from a solution of ammonia or ammonia and salt in water by precipitation with carbon dioxide, the carbon dioxide used as precipitant is derived from the gas evolved, preferably freed from tar, by the low temperature carbonization of the coal or lignite which is used as fuel for supplying the energy requirements of the process. The low temperature carbonization furnace replaces the usual carbon dioxide generator in the plant. The effluent gases have a substantially higher calorific value and are valuable as fuel gases.
