Abstract

170,895. Fast, G. June 22, 1920. Universal joints.- -In shaft couplings allowing a limited universal movement, a sleeve 3, which may be centrally split, encircles the shaft ends, and engages them, or members 1 secured to them, by rings of teeth 2 or other loadcarrying surfaces having slight radial clearance. Rings 6 attached to the sleeve 3 bear by curved faces 9 on extensions 10 of the members 1, which are formed with annular recesses 11 to receive inwardly flanged narts 8 of the rings 6 in order that the contact of the bearings 9 may be centrally of the teeth &c. 2, whereby radial sliding is reduced. The space 5 may be filled with heavy lubricant, which, by reason of the divergent shape of the sleeve 3, is centrifugally forced between the teeth &c. 2 and cushions the drive, the lubricant being retained by the rings 6.
