Abstract

180,390. Williams, E. Jan. 26, 1921. Ball bearings.-One of the bearing rings of a ball bearing is formed in two parts c. Fig. 1, situated on opposite sides of the balls b, the rings c having their adjacent faces chamfered near their outer peripheries and being retained in place by a sleeve or bush d having flanged ends and a peripheral indentation c which serves to space and adjust the rings c. The sleeve &c. d is initially flanged at one end only, and after the parts are assembled therein, the other end is flanged over to cause the rings c to bend on the balls. Adjustment is effected by forming the indentation e which bears on the chamfered faces of the rings and forces them apart to give the required freedom to the balls. In a modification. the indentation e bears on a split and contractile spacing-ring f, Fig. 3, placed between the rings c, one or both faces of the ring f being inclined and the adjacent contacting faces of the rings c being correspondingly formed. The. ring f may be of circular cross-section. The indentation e may be formed in the sleeve &c. before it is flanged or after the insertion of one of the rings c, the final adjustment being made by increasing its depth or a deep indentation may be initially formed in the sleeve. and adjustment effected by pressure on the end flanges of the sleeve.
