Abstract
209,456. Hals, J., and Hals & Co., Aktieselskabet, I. M. Sept. 11, 1922. Clutches, friction.- In centrifugal clutches of the kind in which loose blocks carried by the driving-member press against an annular driven member, the blocks are, arranged to have point or line contact with the driving-member, so that they roll or rock into engagement, the contact surfaces of the blocks or the driving-member being radial. There may be any even number of the blocks, 2, Fig. 2, which may be held in place in the driving-member 3 by shoulders 4, 5. To facilitate assembly, the member 3 is formed in two parts 7, 8, Fig. 3. The driven member 1 may be slidden axially for disengagement. As shown in Fig. 4, the line of driving-thrust 13- 13 passes through the mid-point 15 of the friction surface of the block 2. During acceleration, the thrust exercises on the block a clockwise moment, which is later overcome by centrifugal force, so that the block 2 rocks about the point 14 into engagement. The cylindrical or spherical ends may be replaced by pointed contact surfaces co-operating with radial-ended blocks. In a modification, either part may carry rollers. The contacting surfaces of the driven member 1 and the blocks 2 may be cylindrical, spherical, or single or double conical. In Fig. 12, the centrifugal bodies L are shown as balls, of which there may be more than one row, seated in radial-sided pockets in the driving-member A and coacting with cylindrical, conical, or spherical surfaces on the driven member B. The balls L may be replaced by barrel-shaped or double-conical rollers. In another form, Fig. 18, a radial-sided pin 19 on the member A engages rollers 16 or rounded surfaces on a central cavity in the block L. The pin may carry a pointed knob engaging radial sides of the cavity, or an axially-disposed pin may be used. The blocks L may taper towards their ends to reduce their weight, and may have convex, concave, or wedge-shaped inner surfaces, as shown in Fig. 25, the adjacent parts of the member A being correspondingly shaped. The driven member B may constitute a fly-wheel. Specification 180,417 is referred to.
