Clutches, friction.-In segment clutches, segments A<1> are pressed outwards to engage a ring N, loosely connected by circumferential teeth R to a drum G on the shaft M, by toggle links Q operated by a sliding collar T and pins V and bearing through a cross-head S<1> against cushioning springs S arranged within the segments. The segments are formed in two parts and slide within carriers C, C', one or both of which are secured to the other shaft M', heels B<2> on centrifugal bodies B bearing against the segments to prevent the action of centrifugal force thereon. Abutting teeth on the parts C, C<1> divide the sets of operating-gear. The use of the ring N permits relative axial and radial movement of the shafts.
