Magnets.-The magnetic system of an electric measuring instrument consists of a permanent bar magnet 18, Fig. 1, projecting into, and magnetically connected at one end to, a ring 17 of soft iron or steel. A consequent pole is formed at 19, and magnetic leakage is minimized, permitting an iron case to be employed. Fixed or adjustable magnetic shunte 28 may be arranged as shown in Fig. 5. The permanent magnet may be integral with the surrounding ring, which in this case is of steel. As shown in Fig. 5, the ring may be in two portions 24, 25, the portion 24 being of steel and integral with the projecting polepiece 26; the portion 25 may be of soft iron or steel.
