Abstract

Wheel-guards and obstruction-removers. - To enable the bottom edge of the guard to be carried down near the surface of the road, the guard is suspended by a system of spring-operated levers which permit vertical, longitudinal, and swinging motion. The front screen consists of a centre portion 1, flexibly connected to two front-wheel guards 5 carried by an arm 11 fixed to the stub axle, which ensures the guard moving with the wheels. The guard is suspended by levers pivoted at 10, 9, and 6. The lever 8 is pivoted at 10 and operates in a vertical plane against the action of spring 14. The lever 7 is pivoted at 9 and operates in the same vertical plane, but with its direction of rotation opposite to that of the lever 8, against the action of a spring 15, and the pivot 6 carries the side guard 5, which has a swinging motion in a vertical plane at rightangles to the vertical plane described above against the action of springs 18. The centre screen 1 is attached to the two front-wheel guards 5 by pivots or flexible connections 28 and partakes of their motion. Rollers 22, 21 may be fitted to operate when fouling a kerb or contact with the road respectively. Rubber buffering 24, shown in dotted line in Fig. 4 and terminating in a toe 25, Fig. 5, may be fitted to cover the guards. The guards along the side of the vehicle are suspended by a system of levers in a similar manner. The arms 11 are fixed tc the chassis, and the screen, in one piece, suspended from pivots 6 by means of levers to which the guard is pivoted.
