Abstract

127,767. Puttergill, W. H. Aug. 15, 1918. Wheel guards.-Relates to safety guards for motor-vehicles &c., of the kind in which an arm c supporting the guard k is pivoted at the junction of the stub and dead axles and has a depending portion d connected to the steering-arm e so that the guard follows the turning movements of the wheel. According to the invention, the guard k has a rearwardly-extending arm j which is pivoted to the carrier arm c so as to be movable in a vertical plane, and is provided with means for retaining the guard in its uppermost position, the pivotal connexion comprising a square-headed stud n which passes through a slot m in the arm j, and is secured to the carrier arm c, and is provided with a retaining-pin o, and the means for retaining the guard in the raised position comprising a movable pin r engaging an opening in a second stud p secured to the carrier arm c and passing through an elongated slot q in the arm j. The guard k is provided with a spring-pressed hinged buffing-flap v, and with a rearwardly extending fork or arms y which prevent lateral bending of the guard. In a modification, the carrier arm c, instead of extending entirely horizontally, is bent vertically to reach to the top of the wheel, and then horizontally.
