Abstract
160,871. Mallins, C. W., and Barker, J. P. Nov. 12, 1919. Wheel-guards and obstruction-removers. - A life-guard for motor &c. vehicles comprises a central front guard A, guards for each of the front wheels in the form of hoods B mounted upon the stub axles so as to turn with the wheels in steering and adapted to be in all-positions at the rear of the front guard, and side guards c attached at the front end to the front axle d<1>, extending parallel to the centre line of the vehicle, and having at the rear end a fixed or pivoted bifurcated portion c<1> embracing the rear wheel. The hoods B are provided with an inwardly turned extension b<1>, Fig. 2, as that no gap is left between the hoods and centre guard A when the wheels are deflected. The bifurcated portion c<1> may be formed of a series of slats fixed to a vertical bar c', Fig. 1, attached to the rear ends of the lowermost slats c<1>, c<2> of the side-guard C. Or, as in the construction shown in Fig. 2, the guard for the rear wheel may be pivoted about a vertical rod g<1> and adapted on encountering an obstacle to swing against the action of a control spring g<6> so as to deflect the obstacle outwardry to one side.
