Abstract

Starting.-In engines in which the charge is ignited by the heat of compression, starting is facilitated by high compression, which is afterwards reduced by allowing air to escape from the cylinder towards the end of the compression stroke. In the form shown, a valve e is closed at starting and is afterwards actuated mechanically, towards the end of the compression stroke, to allow air to escape to a reservoir d, which is also supplied with air for scavenging purposes by the usual scavenging-pump'.
