Variable-speed gearing.-Two gears in which tooth mesh cannot readily be changed while under load are adapted to be brought into action alternately by clutches, so that one speed gear may be set for the new speed while the other is under load. Driving and driven shafts b, o carry splined double clutches c, n, respectively. On each side of these clutches and mounted upon loose sleeves e, m and d, l are separate changespeed gears, adapted to be made operative by sliding both clutches c, n towards them. In the arrangement described, the gears are of the kind in which an idle wheel such as k on a sliding tumbler arm i is adapted to be meshed with one of a set of gears 2 - - 10 mounted about the other shaft. The invention is applicable to machine tools and motor-vehicles. Variable-speed gearing; clutches.-Relates to variable-speed gearing of the kind in which toothed wheels 1, 2, Fig. 1, are alternatively connected to a shaft 3 by friction clutches operated by cam rods 15, 16 movable together with a sleeve 13 sliding on the shaft. Each such wheel comprises a loose rim 9, Figs. 2 and 3, and a disc or boss 4 secured to the shaft 3. Connection is made between the disc and rim by arcuate wedge blocks 6, which slide in taper recesses 5 in the periphery of the disc. The rods 15 &c. pass through holes 6<a> in webs upon the blocks 6, and recesses 18 on these rods allow springs 7 to move the blocks into. engagement. Disengagement is effected by the thick parts of the rods. In a modified arrangement, a spring band 25, Fig. 6, is forced outwards into engagement by the thick parts of the rods.
