Abstract

163,081. Pullin, C. G., and Groom, S. L. Jan. 9, 1920. Brake mechanism.-A brake of the type comprising a number of pivoted segments some of which are adapted to be operated by one control acting through a cam to engage the inner surface of a drum while the others are similarly operated by a second independent control is constructed with three such segments 1, 2, 3 pivoted on a three-armed spider 5, 6, 7 the segment 2 being operated by a cam 11 and the segments 1, 3 by a cam 12. The cam 11 may be actuated by Bowden-wire control 24, 26 and the cam 12 by a foot-lever control 21, 22, 23, three different degrees of braking being obtained according as one or the other or both controls are employed. A chain guard 20 carries a sleeve 18 to which the spider is secured. A chain-wheel 15 which engages the wheel of the cycle by lugs 17 is mounted on the sleeve 18 and the inner surface of this wheel forms the brake drum for the segments 1, 2, 3.
