Abstract

Guards, controlling.-The lap roller in a cotton opener, scutcher, or lap-forming apparatus is protected by a guard a, which is operated by the starting-handle and is interconnected with the weighting-rack so that it is maintained in position when the rack is weighting the rollers and the machine is in operation. The guard is pivoted on a rod b, Fig. 1, and is lowered into position on movement of the starting-handle t, through the slotted link q and lever n. It is raised gradually as the lap grows by the weighted lever h which bears under a pin j on one of the weighting-racks m. The guard can be locked in its closed position when the racks are raised by a catch w, Fig. 3, controlled by a spring 2. The catch w bears by means of the stud z on the edge of the rack, so that as the rack is lowered its enlarged head will release the catch, the guard then being controlled by the pin j and lever h. The guard is provided with a movable board c for directing the lap round the roller at the beginning of the winding operation.
