Abstract

550,830. Combing-machines; controlling machinery guards &c. NASMITH, J. W. April 25, 1941, No. 5333. [Class 120 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a textile combing-machine of the Heilmann and Nasmith type having means for weighting the top detaching roller and relieving such weighting two pivoted control bars connected to the movable weighting mechanism are provided and are moved by the relieving or re-applying of the roller weighting, the stop rod of the machine having projections which permit the fall of the control bars and the relief of the weighting only the when rod is in the "stopping" position and which prevents movement of the rod to the "starting" position until the control bars are again raised by the re-application of the roller weighting; means may also be provided for ensuring that the top comb and its shield cannot be raised to give access to the combing cylinder needles while the machine is running and preventing the starting of the machine while the comb is raised while a guard at the rear of the combing cylinder may be arranged to be held closed while the machine is running and to be opened only when the rod is in the 'stop' position. As shown the hand-lever 3 at one side of the combing head by which the weighting mechanism is held in the working position and which is held in such position by a latch 5, is pivoted on a fixed pin 2 and to a pin 7 in a bracket 8 clamped to one control bar 9 which can thus rock on the pin 7; the lever 3 at the other side of the head is similarly connected to the second control bar 14. The front end of the bar 9 carries a block 12 which, when the machine is running just clears a projection 13 on a block 6 fixed to the starting and stopping rod 1 and if the latch 5 should be accidentally lifted the lever 3 is prevented from falling and taking the weight off the detaching roller; when the rod is moved to stop the machine the projection 13 is withdrawn from the block 12 and the lever 3 can be moved from the working position and in the stopping position the block 12 lies against the framing F and prevents the rod being moved to the 'starting' position until the block is raised by restoring the lever 3 to its working position. The bar 14 carries at the front end a block 15 which when the machine is working, just clears a second projection 16 on the block 6 and prevents movement of the second lever 3. The bar 9 may also be connected by a block 10 to the top comb arm 11 carrying the comb 13 and its shield S in a position such that the bar remains practically unaffected by the movement of the arm 11 and the comb and shield cannot be raised while the machine is running and while raised the rod 1 cannot be moved to start the machine. The rod 14 may also be hinged to a bar 18 hinged on a pin 19 fixed on a disc 20 having a slit 21 engaging a pin 22 on a fixed bracket 23 having a slot 24 at the bottom of which the pin 19 normally rests. The disc 20 carries the cylinder guard 25 which while the machine is running cannot be lifted to give access to the comb cylinder mounted on the shaft W by reason of the block 15 contacting with the projection 16. When the rod is moved to stop the machine, the projection 16 moves from under the block 15 and the guard 25 and the rear end of the bar 14 may be lifted, the pin 19 moving up the slot 24 until the pin 22 emerges from the slot 21 when the guard may be turned on the pivot 19 and held in its raised position by a notch 27 in the disc engaging the pin 22; while the guard is open the end of the projection 16 abuts against the block 15 which is supported by a strap 17 on the frame F and the rod 1 cannot be moved to the 'starting' position. Specifications 489,003 and 132,987, [Class 120 (i)] are referred to.
