Abstract

529,917. Combing-machines; guards for machinery. BIRCH, A. June 9, 1939, No. 16886. [Class 120 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A combing machine has a guard for the comb and associated parts of each combing head which cannot be removed until the moving parts of the machine are at rest and, while one or more of the guards are removed, the machine cannot be started; an additional guard may be provided for preventing access to a cylinder from the rear of the machine when the latter is running. As shown the guard a, Fig. 1, for the comb 2, nipper 3 and rollers 4 of each head of the machine is carried by arms a<SP>1</SP> pivoted to fixed brackets a<SP>3</SP> and carries a frame 8 pivoted in the arms a<SP>1</SP> and connected by a rod 9 to a lever 10 loosely mounted on a shaft 11 to which is fixed a lever 12 having a lateral pin 12a engaging the lever 10 when the guard is closed and supported by feet a<SP>4</SP> resting on a bracket 7. The shaft 11 extends the length of the machine and has fixed thereto a lever 13 coupled to a rod 14 provided with an actuating handle 14a and having its end disposed adjacent a member 16 fixed to the usual starting rod 15. When the machine is running, the rod 14 cannot be moved to lift the guards since its end abuts against the member 16 but when the starting rod has been shifted to stop the machine, the end of the rod 14 is in alignment with an aperture in the member 16 and can then be moved if the moving parts are at rest, to rock the shaft 11 and remove the pins 12a away from the levers 10. So long as the brush and other parts are rotating a wiper 25 on the shaft 23 of the brush engages a projection 25a on the rod 14 and pushes it forward so that its end cannot engage the aperture in the member 16. When the parts are at rest any or all of the guards can now be raised and when raised are supported by engagement with catch springs 20 on the rail 19 and the machine cannot be restarted until all the guards are lowered and the levers 10 moved to allow the rod 14 being pushed back and the end thereof removed from the aperture in the member 16 on the starting rod. So long as the brush and other parts are rotating a wiper 25 on the shaft 23 of the brush engages a projection 25a on the rod 14 and pushes it forward so that its end cannot engage the aperture in the member 16. An additional guard 27, Fig. 7, may be provided to co-operate with the plate 26 at the rear of the machine and prevent access to the cylinder until the guard a has been raised.
