Abstract
379,851. Machinery guards. WINN, W. and INGRAM, J. D., Old Anchor Foundry, Watergate, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Aug. 25, 1931, No. 23838. [Class 80 (iv).] In a mangling or other like roller machine in which one of the rollers is carried by an arm pivotally mounted on the main frame, the pivoted arm is normally maintained in position by a catch engaging a fixed part of the frame and the catch is automatically released on the approach of a bulky object to the rollers. A mangle with a lower roller 1 mounted in the main frame 2 has the upper roller 3 mounted in a bearing block 4 in a secondary frame 5 with slots 8 in its lower edge which engage pins 7, 7<x> on the main frame. Catches comprising pivoted bell-crank levers 9, 9<x> engaging the pins 7, 7<x> normally lock the frame 5 but can be released by the movement of pivoted levers 10, 10<x>, the lower ends of which bear on the free ends of the bell-crank levers 9, 9<x>. The levers 10, 10<x> are provided with cross-bars 11, 11<x> extending transversely across the machine in front of the rollers and above feed boards 12 so that the lever on the feed side of the rollers is automatically caused to move about its pivot by any bulky object approaching the rollers. The upper roller 3 is pressed against the lower roller by a leaf spring 13, and when a catch is released the spring tends to turn the frame 5 about the unreleased catch. To produce a positive lift of the upper roller, a double rack 15 may be provided which is pivotally attached to the frame 5 and normally hangs vertically and clears a pinion 16 at both sides but is moved into mesh with the pinion, simultaneously with the release of the catch, by the movement of the lever 10 or 10<x>. In the case of a non-reversing machine one of the catches 9, 9<x> is replaced by a fixed pivot.
