Abstract

1,013,958. Tentering fabrics. MARSHALL & WILLIAMS CORPORATION. Mar. 23, 1964 [Nov. 19,1963], No. 12101/64. Heading D1S. A two-piece tenter chain element comprises (a) a base 10, Fig. 6, having means 36, 37 for detachably connecting it to two roller links 23, 23A and a wall 14 parallel to but remote from the front face 11 thereof and (b) a holding device 50, Fig. 1, detachably fixed to a seating 15,15A on the base 10 by screws 90 so that the base 10 and /or the device 50 can be readily replaced; the device 50 having an aligning edge 47 removably engageable with the wall 14 to withstand the pull of the fabric upon the device 50. The chain elements are connected together by pins 36, 37, Fig. 6, slidably inserted through bores 7, 8 in the bottom 12 and upper portion 13 and bearings 31, 33 in the links 23, 23A, respectively. The pins 36, 37 are T-shaped and have heads 36A, 37A which may be square and which engage in a groove 18 in the seating 15, 15A to prevent the pins 36, 37 rotating. To separate the base 10 and the links 23, 23A the pins 36, 37 are merely lifted out. The device 50, Figs. 1 and 6, comprises a movable jaw 55 freely hinged to a pintle 56 and provided with an arm 20 operable by a cam (not shown) to release fabric being gripped by the jaw. A body 59 is pivoted by a shaft 61 to the jaw 55 and is provided with a shoe face 64 terminating in an arcuate portion 65. When the jaw 55 closes, under gravity, to grip a fabric, the heel 66 of the body 59 initially engages the fabric against a clamping area 58 on a base 51 and the shoe face 64 then pivots into engagement with the area 58. A coil spring 57 may be interposed between a recess 69 and a projection 68 (both not shown) to assist in moving the jaw 55 into clamping position. The superstructure 50 is held on the base 10 by screws 90, Fig. 1, engaging internally threaded bores 21, 22, Fig.6, in the seating area 15A. In a modification, Fig. 7, the superstructure 50A comprises a movable jaw 55A pivotable, under gravity, about a pintle 56A so that a gripping surface 55B on the jaw 55A engages the clamping area 58A. In a further modification, Fig. 9, the superstructure 50B comprises a pin block having a platform 72 provided with pins 73. A seating pad 48C and an aligning edge 71 are provided. In another modification, Fig. 10, the face 11A of the base 10A is provided with cut-outs 80, 81 through which rollers 27B, 27C on links 23B, 23C project to engage a guide rail (not shown). The groove 18 is omitted and the heads 36B, 37B of the pivot pins engage-orifices shaped to prevent the heads rotating. Specification 907,506 is referred to.
