CHUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
a lication and December 27, 1920. Serial No. 433,366.
provide a device of this character which will securely clamp the. pipe under operation, in a manner to prevent movement thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide movable 'aws which may be readily and easily moved mto clamping relation with the pipe, the operating means being constructed to lock the jaws in their clamping positions.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construct-ion hereinafter described and claimed, it bein understood that changes in the precise em, odiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de arting from the s irit of the invention.
eferring to the rawings Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a chuck constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the chuck, the cover plate thereof being removed.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail the reference character 5 designates the body of the chuck which includes the circular head 6 and the stem 7, the circular head being provided with a flange 8 to accommodate the aw carrying ring 9. The head 6 is cut away to provide an enlargement 10, which enlargement is cut away to provide the clear ances 11 designed to accommodate the clamp arms 12 which have laterally extending portions 13 providing jaws.
The jaw carrying rin carries the plates 14 on theopposite sides t ereof, which plates provide supports for the outer ends of the clampin arms 12 there being provided pivot pins 15 or connecting the clamp arms to the plates 14. to permit 01" pivotal movement of the clamp arms with respect thereto.
The ring 9 is formed of opposed sections pivotally connected as at 16, the opposite ends of the section being connected by the link 17 and lever 18, the link 17 being shown j as having pivotal connection with the boss 19,
while the lever 18 has. pivotal connection with the boss 20 forming a part of the opposed section. The link 17 also has connection with the lever 18 as at 21, so that movement of the lever 18 to a position shown by Fig.
3 of the drawings, moves the sections of the ring toward each other to cause a relative movement of the clamping jaws to clamp an article:
Then the lever is moved in the opposite direction, the sections of the ring are moved with respect to each other to cause the jaws to move out of clamping relation with each other to release the pipe or articlev under operation.
Positioned on the clamp arms 12, is a circular member 22 which carrics'lugs 23 adapted to be positioned between the clamp arms to hold the same in their proper relation with respect to the walls oi the clearances 11.
In order that the. clamp arms will be supported in proper position within the head, a cover plate 24 provided, which cover plate is secured to the head, as by means 01' the screws 25 which pass through suitable openings provided in the plate and head. This plate 24 is provided with a central. opening adapted to permit the jaws of the clamp to pass therethrough and grip an article under operation.
It is believed that in view of the foregoing description, a further detail description as to the operation of the device is unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a pipe clamping device, a head, said head being cut away to provide clearances, aclamp arm supporting ring'secured to the head, clamp arms carried by the ring and havings aws formed at the free ends thereof, said ring being formed of opposed sections, means for connecting the sections to permit the sections to be moved with respect to each other, and said sections adapted to move the clamp arms and. jaws toward and away from each other.
2. In a pipe clamping device. a head, said head being cut away. to provide clearances, clamp arms positioned. between the clearances a sectional ring member having connection with the clamp arms jaws formed one end of each clamp arm, means for moving the sections of the ring to move the clamp arms to cause the jaws to move with respect to each other, and a cover plate having connection with the head for restricting movement of the clamp arms.
3. In a pipe clamping (levicqa'heacl, a sectional ring supported by the heed the sections being pivotally connected, clan-1p arms pivot-ally connected to the ring, soicl clamp arms having jaws formed at their free ends,
means disposed between the clamp arms for holding the game in spaced relation with each other, and means for connecting the opposite ends of the sectional ring for moving the arms wxth respect to each other.
