Abstract

578,595. Machinery guards. BUSFIELD, H. H., and PEATE, N. C. L. Oct. 30, 1943, No. 17965. [Class 80 (iv)] In a textile milling, fulling, crushing or combined milling and scouring machine, which is controlled by a starting handle m' located at the side of the machine and pivoted in a vertical plane to control the position of a belt-shifter or clutch-actuator, a guard a, in the form of a grid. or gate, is slidable vertically in guides cover that portion of the front opening of the machine through which an operative might have access to the nip rollers or other dangerous parts, and is connected with the starting handle by means which, when the guard is not in operative position, prevents starting of the machine, and when the guard is in operative position lock it against movement to inoperative position until the machine is stopped. As shown, the guard a is connected by links d, e, to a rock shaft f having a pinion g meshing with a toothed rack on a bar h guided for frontward and rearward sliding movement. The starting handle m<1> carried on a lever m is connected by a link k to a vertically slidable bar j having an aperture j' therein. In the position shown the guard a is in its operative position and the handle m<1> in the position in which the machine is stopped. If the guard is raised a projection h' on the bar h passes through the hole j' and prevents operation of the machine by the handle m<1>. If however the handle m<1> has been operated the guard a cannot be raised as the projection h' will abut a blank portion of the bar j. To hold the starting handle m' in its inoperative position it is engaged by a part t<1> of a spring-urged pivoted catch member t. Specification 482,663 is referred to.
